These pioneers were either born in Lancashire or their endeavours made a significant contribution to the development of the County.

Lancashire Poetry Index

An index to authors, first lines and titles of Lancashire poetry in books held within libraries in Lancashire, including the Lancashire Authors’ Association collection.

The index provides details of the book in which a particular poem may be found and also a link through to the library catalogue to give the locations of the required volume.

Compiled originally by Raymond Pickles (former District Librarian of Burnley District Libraries) and Mike Finney (Librarian of the Lancashire Authors’ Association). Staff and other volunteers are adding to the database on a continuing basis.

Local Studies Resources

Armed Forces Index A list of references from Local press including Obituaries and Cuttings about local people who have served as members of HM Armed Forces.

Obituaries Index An Index to Printed Obituaries from the Local Press in Lancashire.

Please note: The Armed Forces Index and Obituaries Index currently cover the Burnley area only.

Transactions Index Enhances our knowledge of Lancashire's history by providing an index to some of the papers published by learned societies in Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria (1980 onwards*) and also to articles in other local journals held in the Library Service.

Cheshire County Council have the Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire and of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society (but not Cumberland and Westmorland) indexed online from the first volume.

[* An index to papers pre-1980 can be found at The Royal Historical Society Bibliography website.]

Newspaper Index A general index to Newspaper articles current and historical from the Local Press in Lancashire. The Newspaper Index mainly covers Preston, Chorley and East Lancashire at present, but it is under continuous development.

In addition to our Newspaper Index, you may wish to search Newsbank, part of our Online Reference Library, for recent newspaper stories. Many North Western newspapers are included in Newsbank, with coverage varying from 1995 onwards.

Census Index This is a compilation of Head of Household Indexes for Burnley and District, Surname Index and Place Name Index to local records from some of the ten year Censuses taken between 1841 and 1891. These indexes are incomplete.

Parish Registers Index An Index to St. Peter's Church Burnley Burials Register. It is intended to add from Parish Registers across the County.
